DO I NEED TO BE A NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER?

Thailand recognizes native-English speakers as passport holders of a country whose primary language is English, which includes the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. However, non-native English speakers can still teach in Thailand. If you are not from one of the countries listed by the Thai Government, you must take a TOEIC exam to prove your English proficiency and obtain a TEFL certificate.

Non-native teachers can be employed in Thailand for English teaching jobs.

To teach English in Thailand, you must hold a TEFL certification, possess a Bachelor's degree in any field/major, and be a native-English speaker or a non-native English Speaker with fluency in English.

If you are a Thai citizen or hold dual citizenship, you can still teach English in Thailand. It is legal for Thai citizens to hold dual citizenship, and having Thai dual citizenship can be beneficial for traveling purposes.
